Comparative Study on Water Temperature Stratified Flow under Different Vertical Coordinate Systems in Delft3D

Reservoirs often suffer from water blooms, which are likely related to the hydrodynamic and temperature characteristics of tributary bays. To obtain detailed changing process hydrodynamics stratification, it is necessary choose a suitable vertical coordinate system in order achieve required precision. Based on physical model experiment cold flowing into Generalized Reservoir Hydraulics (GRH) flume, both σ-coordinate z-coordinate built for comparison. For model, influences different grid resolutions bottom slopes simulation accuracy also analyzed. The results show that can simulate cold-water underflow reservoir better than numerical errors be reduced but not eliminated by increasing horizontal resolution. When slope less 18‰, used reservoir. conclusions about systems applied development three-dimensional reservoirs.
